After the closure of operations in South Bend, two vendors of the Studebaker of South Bend, Nate Altman and Leo Newman bought the Avanti name, the molds of body parts remaining, tools, gadgets and a portion of the factory in South Bend to continue manufacturing the Avanti. Altman and Newman negotiated first with the Checker Motors Company, maker of the iconic Checker Marathon car and taxi back on production. However, President of Checker, David Markin stated publicly that his company was not interested in building "an ugly car" as the Avanti. These Avantis, known as the Avanti II, had an engine of Chevrolet Corvette 5.4L (327 ina), and they were meticulously assembled by hand to order, made very few of them. The engine evolved from the Avanti II 5.4L (327 ina) to 5.75L (350 ina), then to 6.55L (400 ina), and finally a 5.0L (305 ina). Until 1987, the Avanti II was built on Studebaker chassis. Models 1987 to 1989 were based on the General Motors G platform, specifically in Monte Carlo. The 1 October 1982, the real estate developer Stephen H. Blake bought the rights to the Avanti II. Blake made some upgrades to the vehicle, of which the most notable were the change in plastic, integrated bumpers, and redesign the board and inside the car (introduced in a limited edition of the twentieth anniversary, but continued in subsequent editions), and also introduced a convertible model. At that time the "II" was removed from the name, although the car was substantially the same, despite the above changes. Blake's company declared bankruptcy in 1986, being bought by Michael Kelly, who moved production to Youngstown, Ohio. In September 1988, Kelly sold his portion of shares in the company of a large investor, JJ Cafaro, a builder of shopping centers in Youngstown. Production declined with the death of the G platform, and the subsequent concentration of production in a four-door model called "Luxury Touring Sedan", based on the chassis of the Chevrolet Caprice. By 1991, production of the Avanti II had practically disappeared, and a fire in 1992 ended by stopping the final production.
